“When I found North York Women’s Centre, everything in my body sang,” says Anaya Boucaud (she/they), who was appointed Coordinator, Drop-In Services for NYWC in September 2024. Anaya organizes the drop-in Women’s Lounge, offering free recreational and educational activities open to women and non-binary folks. Women are invited to the drop-in space to socialize, have fun and learn together (and unlike Women’s Programs at NYWC, there’s no advance registration required). Check out the events calendar for free activities and programs.

Free 1:1 Support For Women At NYWC

She also coordinates free peer support for women, which is available in person or by phone, or by booking an appointment. During one-on-one support, Anaya might help women connect with available housing or food banks, make a safety plan to leave or navigate a violent situation, or make a phone call with you to advocate on your behalf.

Helping Women Feel Seen And Validated

Anaya sees advocacy as being a cross between a mirror and a second pair of eyes. “I believe advocacy allows people to be seen and to see themselves.” When she was experiencing abuse, she longed for someone to look in from the outside and help them see where they might benefit from support. “All I wanted was to share what I wanted, and for someone to tell me what my next steps would be,” she remembers. She thinks everyone deserves to be offered the opportunity to receive help on their terms, and is eager to be a second pair of eyes for diverse women in the NYWC community.

Empowering Woman-Identifying And Gender-Diverse People

Anaya is most excited to get to know community members to learn what empowerment looks like for them. One woman, might want to gain confidence walking to the bus stop by herself; another, might wish to have Anaya review a resume or a government form; another may want help overcoming loneliness and making new friends at a fun NYWC social event or workshop. “I’m looking forward to being a part of their journey, having some fun together and celebrating our wins,” says Anaya.

Finding Community And Belonging At NYWC

“I feel like I am exactly where I’m meant to be, both professionally and from where my passion lies,” says Anaya. “I wish I had something like this when I was a young person looking for resources. Now that I’m on the other side, it feels totally aligned. I found a place where I belong.”
